Why Wickwell Gardens Exists

Hi we're Andrew and Lauren.

We started Wickwell Gardens because we think more people should be able to grow some of their own fresh toxin-free food at home — without needing to be experienced gardeners.

We're pretty open about what we do and why we do it. So rather than give you a sales pitch, here's our mission and the five things we stand by as a business.

Our mission

Make homegrown food accessible to more people, with less work and have more confidence in how their food is grown.

These are the five things we stand for:

Accessibility
Growing food should be possible for different ages, abilities, homes and lifestyles no matter where your at in life.

Better Quality Produce
Grow food at home and decide for yourself if pesticides, sprays and fertilisers are used on it.

Save Time & Money
Use less water, spend less time maintaining the garden and grow some of the produce you'd otherwise have to buy.

Education
We'll show you how the system works, what to plant, when to plant it and how to keep the garden productive.

Sustainability
Use less water, waste less food, compost more and grow some of what you eat closer to home.

We're not trying to turn everyone into a gardening expert.

We just want to make growing some of your own food easy enough that more households actually do it.

Accessibility

Healthy food should be available for everyone, without the fear of pesticides or chemicals

Higher Quality

If you grow it yourself you know exactly what's in your food. You can also can pick and eat it fresh.

Save Time/ Money

Our beds store water meaning less watering. They are self-sufficient with no weeding. Grow your own food saving supermarket bills.

Education

We dont want to install a garden bed that gets ignored we want to show and teach why everyone should grow food and how.

Sustainability

Save water, save waste, save packaging, less chemical usage in the air we can all do our part.

Our Five Focuses

What are our beds made of?

As we believe you should know what your food is being grown in. Here's exactly what our beds are made from, why we chose those materials and how long they're designed to last.

Untreated Cypress Pine
We use naturally durable Cypress Pine without preservative treatment. Cypress is naturally resistant to decay and termites, which means we don't need to rely on chemically treated pine to get a long-lasting garden bed.

100% Recycled Polypropylene Wicking System
The wicking components underneath your soil are made from recycled polypropylene (PP) and are AS/NZS 4020 compliant for products used in contact with drinking water.

In simple terms: we've chosen a wicking system we're comfortable putting underneath a garden that grows food.

Hot-Dip Galvanised Joinery
Our bolts, brackets and structural joinery are hot-dip galvanised to help protect the steel from corrosion outdoors.

It's not the cheapest way to put a garden bed together, but we'd rather build it properly.

Geotextile

We use a durable geotextile layer to separate the soil from the wicking reservoir underneath. It helps stop soil from washing down into the water storage area while still allowing moisture to move through the bed as intended. We also line the bottom of the bed to keep all the healthy things inside.

Built for the Long Term
These aren't garden beds designed to be replaced every few years.

With good installation and normal maintenance, we design our Cypress beds with a 20+ year life in mind.

Timber is a natural product, so we're not going to promise an exact lifespan. Weather, moisture, maintenance and the individual timber all matter.

But the goal is simple:

Build it once. Grow food in it for a long time.

The Wickwell Blog

We're not going to fill this blog with articles written just to rank on Google or convince you to buy a garden bed. If we don't think something is useful, we won't post it.

This is where we'll share what we've learned about growing food at home — what to plant, what works, what doesn't, wicking beds, soil, pests, watering, sustainability and the questions our customers regularly ask us. We'll also share things we're learning ourselves along the way.

We don't claim to know everything about gardening. But when we know something useful, we'll share it. And when we don't know, we'll do the research rather than make something up.

Premium Wicking Bed Installation in NSW/ACT

Wickwell Gardens supplies and installs premium wicking beds, raised vegetable garden beds and self-watering garden systems across NSW and the ACT. Our garden beds are built from untreated Cypress Pine and professionally installed with the complete wicking system, quality soil blend and everything required to leave your new vegetable garden ready to plant. We provide wicking bed installation for homes, families, schools, older Australians and anyone looking for a simpler way to grow fresh food at home.

Our self-watering wicking garden beds are designed to store water beneath the soil and allow moisture to move upwards into the growing area as plants need it. This reduces the need for regular surface watering and provides a more consistent source of moisture for vegetables, herbs and other edible plants. Whether you're looking for one raised garden bed for a small backyard or a complete home vegetable garden installation, we can design the size, height and layout around the available space.

We install wicking beds throughout Sydney, Greater Sydney, regional NSW, Canberra and the ACT, with custom garden bed installations available for a wide range of properties and spaces. Our expert installation service includes delivery, construction, installation of the water reservoir and wicking components, filling the garden with our growing medium and explaining how the system works. There are no DIY kits or complicated instructions to work through — we install the garden for you and leave it ready to start growing.

If you're searching for wicking beds in Sydney, raised garden beds in NSW, self-watering vegetable gardens, Cypress Pine garden beds or professional wicking bed installation in Canberra and the ACT, Wickwell Gardens can help. Our focus is simple: build long-lasting food-growing systems using carefully selected materials, make them easy to use and give more households the confidence to grow some of their own fresh produce at home.
